WordPress or custom code: what to choose for your website
WordPress or a custom-coded site (Vue, Nuxt, React): compared on speed, price, convenience and security. When WordPress is enough, when custom code wins.
When you order a website, you will be told either "we'll build it on WordPress" or "we'll write it in our own code". Both options are good, but for different tasks. Here is how they differ, so you can choose knowingly.
What the options are
WordPress is a ready-made content management system (CMS): an admin panel, a page editor, thousands of extensions. The site is put together from ready-made parts and adjusted to you.
Custom code is a site written for your task, for example in Vue, Nuxt or React. Everything in it is made for you: structure, interface, logic.
Comparison
| WordPress | Custom code | |
|---|---|---|
| Start | fast, lots of ready-made parts | longer: we write for the task |
| Convenience for the editor | a familiar interface | depends on what we build |
| Site speed | depends on the theme and extensions | usually higher |
| Logic flexibility | limited by extensions | any |
| Security | needs updates and control | fewer vulnerable spots, but still needs care |
| Cost of the start | lower for typical sites | higher, especially for simple ones |
| Cost of changes | cheap for typical changes | a developer is needed |
When to choose WordPress
- the site is typical: a business card website, a corporate website, a blog, a WooCommerce store;
- you want to change texts, add pages and news yourself;
- the budget is limited and you need to launch quickly;
- your team already knows WordPress.
For such tasks a WordPress website is a perfectly sensible choice, as long as it is built carefully: with its own lightweight theme and without dozens of unnecessary extensions.
When custom code is better
- you need non-standard logic: calculators, accounts, complex scenarios;
- speed is critical: advertising, heavy traffic, weak mobile internet;
- the site will become part of a product that will keep developing;
- you need security and don't want to depend on other people's extensions.
For such projects, web apps on Vue, Nuxt or React or an online store on custom code are a good fit.
Common mistakes
- WordPress with a heavy ready-made theme: A builder theme pulls in a pile of scripts and the site gets slow. That is not WordPress's fault, but the fault of the theme choice.
- Twenty extensions for every little thing: Each one slows the site and adds risk. A few reliable ones are better.
- Custom code with no plan for editing: If only the developer changes the texts, small edits become expensive. So agree on an editor right away.
- Nobody updates the site: Both WordPress and custom code need care. See website support and rework.
Can you switch later
Yes. Content from WordPress is moved to another stack, and page URLs are kept with redirects.
If your WordPress site has become slow, it can be sped up without a complete rewrite.
If it can no longer cope, a redesign will move it to a modern stack with minimal risk to search positions.
How to decide
Answer honestly:
- Is my site typical? Yes → WordPress.
- Will I edit it myself? Yes → WordPress, or custom code with an editor.
- Do I need non-standard logic or maximum speed? Yes → custom code.
- Will the site grow into a product? Yes → custom code.
